Date:10/15/09
Speaker(s):Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Senior Political Advisor for the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Ahmed Aboul Gheit
Description:Ambassador Hossam Zaki is Senior Political Advisor for the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Ahmed Aboul Gheit and serves as Deputy Chief of Cabinet as well as Official Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry. In these positions, Ambassador Zaki is intimately involved with restarting the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations as well as with reconciliation talks between Hamas and Fatah. He joins the Council to provide an insider perspective to the negotiations that are going on behind the scenes between Egypt, the United States, Israel, the Palestinians, and the international community. Egypt has also been serving as an intermediary between Hamas and Fatah with the goal of forming a Palestinian unity government. To date, these negotiations have not yielded much success. Ambassador Zaki will discuss what the major points of contention are and the likelihood of political reconciliation between the two camps. Ambassador Zaki served as Egypt’s Deputy Chief of Mission to the United Kingdom from 2005 to 2007. From 2003 to 2005, he was appointed Spokesperson for the Secretary General of the League of Arab States Amre Moussa.
